I had to put this interview on this blog. I bought Billy Joel albums back in the 70s and still have them. One of my favorites was “The Stranger.” Billy’s piano playing is even more incredible than I ever realized listening to his songs. He doesn’t read music and can play classical by ear.
He sings some of his biggest hits during the interview as he sits at the piano and talks about the making of some of those great songs. This is a must-see interview for anyone who ever liked Billy Joel or his music. His sense of humor is great and his “regular guy” persona comes across, including his self-deprecating remarks, which are very funny.
Rick has taught music for years, so the first minutes of the video get into some of the minutia of classical music, but stay with it. I noticed smoke wafting up a few times, or once coming out of Billy’s mouth, that were all probably meant to be edited out, so it is surprising that a guy who can still sing so well smokes. What do you think when you watch the video?
